Thank you for considering a volunteer opportunity at the San Diego Food Bank!
Below, you will find detailed information about our volunteer program and registration options for your upcoming volunteer activity!
Who can Volunteer?
The San Diego Food Bank relies on individuals and volunteer groups to help us in our warehouse, at food distribution sites, and at Food Bank events. Anyone who is 11 years of age and older is welcome to volunteer. Training is not required, and there are no time commitments. You may volunteer one time, or on a regular basis.
Online registration and check-in:
Volunteers are required to sign up for a shift using our online registration system. Once you have selected your shift, upon arrival, each volunteer is asked to “check-in” at our volunteer kiosks. If you are in need of supplementary documentation to verify the number of hours you worked, please bring the proper paperwork with you, and a Food Bank staff member will provide the necessary information and approval.
Volunteer projects and tasks:
Each shift lasts about three hours and involves a variety of projects and tasks. Volunteer projects may include, but are not limited to:
- Cleaning and packaging fresh produce for immediate distribution.
- Inspecting, sorting, boxing, and labeling food donations.
- Assembling food packages for our Senior Food Program, Moms & Children Food Program, Food Assistance Program, and our Food 4 Kids Backpack Program.
Please note: Volunteer tasks are pre-determined by staff and are selected on an “as needed” basis.
Registration for individual volunteers:
If you are a first-time volunteer, you will be asked to create a log-in and password when you sign up for your first shift on our volunteer registration system. Please be sure to store your log-in information for future use. Once registered and logged in, select your shift, and a confirmation email will be sent back to you.
For returning volunteers, simply log in, select a shift, and you will receive a confirmation email.
Registration for volunteer groups:
Volunteering at the Food Bank is a great team-building experience for groups of all sizes. Whether you are a large corporation, a small club, or a school group, you will work together on a hands-on project at the Food Bank’s warehouse.
Groups of less than 5 volunteers:
If you have a group of less than five people, each volunteer must register as an individual. (See individual registration instructions above).
As long as you sign up for the same date and shift time, you will still be able to work together.
Groups of 5 or more volunteers:
Please CLICK HERE to fill out our Group Volunteer Submission Form.
For best availability, contact us at least a month in advance, and please allow at least 72 hours for a Food Bank staff member to reply to your message.
Guidelines for children and youth volunteers:
Due to safety regulations, children ages 10 years and under CANNOT volunteer at the San Diego Food Bank. Volunteers MUST be 11 years of age or older.
In addition, children ages 11 years old to 15 years old MUST be accompanied by an adult. 1 adult MUST ACCOMPANY every 4 children ages 11 to 15 years old.
We would like to remind every volunteer that it is their responsibility to plan and schedule their visit well in advance, since registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Warehouse Tours Offered
Please note: We do offer educational, behind-the-scenes tours of the Food Bank’s warehouse facilities to groups of children ages 10 years old and under. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO!
Guidelines for court-mandated service hours:
The Food Bank accepts court mandated service hours, but ONLY misdemeanor offenses will be considered eligible, and additional documentation must be provided.
The Food Bank will verify the information while your application is being considered. Failure to provide any of the required information will result in immediate disqualification of your volunteer application.
Mandatory Volunteer Documents
