Call Congress and Tell Your Representative to Vote NO on the 2018 Farm Bill

The San Diego Food Bank encourages all of our supporters to call your member of Congress and tell them to vote NO on 2018 Farm Bill that will cut SNAP (Food Stamps) by $20 billion. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the 2018 Farm Bill within the coming weeks. We encourage you to contact your member of Congress as soon as possible and tell them to vote NO. The 2018 Farm Bill was introduced in Congress last month. Every five years or so Congress passes the Farm Bill which covers expenditure and policy for a number of areas including agriculture and food nutrition programs including SNAP (also known as CalFresh/Food Stamps) and other USDA food security programs. The San Diego Food Bank and hunger-relief organizations across the country are opposed to measures in the 2018 Farm Bill that would adversely affect nutrition assistance programs. The bill contains changes that would cause more than 1 million low-income households with more than 2 million people — particularly low-income working families with children — to lose their SNAP benefits altogether or have them reduced. How to Contact Your Member of Congress:When calling your Representative, ask to speak to the staff person who handles agriculture and nutrition issues. Use the talking points below to highlight the harm the House Farm Bill (H.R. 2) would have on hunger in your District and San Diego County:

  • The House Farm Bill will take food out of the refrigerators and off the tables of our state's most vulnerable residents including working-poor families, children living in poverty, low-wage workers, individuals with disabilities, and older adults.
  • We urge [Representative's Name] to vote NO on the House Farm Bill (H.R. 2) which contains over $20 billion in SNAP cuts to benefits and new eligibility rules that will increase hunger and hardship for low-income Californians.
