With over a decade of progressively responsible experience in external affairs, Carlos Illingworth is currently Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations for the Vons Division of Safeway, a Fortune 100 company, where he is responsible for all media, community and government relations.
As the grocery chain’s chief external affairs officer, Illingworth represents Vons on the boards of various business organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce Alliance of Venture and Santa Barbara Counties, Valley Industry and Commerce Association, L.A. County Economic Development Corporation, L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce, L.A. Business Council, Central City Association of L.A., San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership and Retail Association of Nevada.
He also serves on the boards of local, regional and statewide nonprofits, including the Urban Council of the Metro L.A. YMCA, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project. Under his leadership and as Chair of The Vons Foundation, Vons employees contributed over 425,000 volunteer hours to the community in 2013, while the company and its foundation donated more than $11.8 million to charitable causes, another $12.1 million in product and 2.9 million pounds of food to hunger-relief agencies and nonprofits.
As alumnus of Cal State L.A., where he served two years as student body president, Illingworth is a former Trustee of the Cal State L.A. Foundation and Past president of the Cal State L.A. Alumni Association. He is also a graduate of Leadership L.A., a fellowship program of the L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce, and received a Certificate in Education for Leadership in Public Service from the Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy.
Prior to joining Vons, Illingworth worked for two members of the California State Assembly and was a consultant with a Sacramento-based administrative services and lobbying firm whose clients include nearly 70 percent of California’s K-12 school districts.
