The San Diego Food Bank distributes nutritious, high-quality food through a range of programs to people in need. The Food Bank also connects the people it serves to a range of health and human service providers. All Food Bank clients are treated with dignity and respect.
The Moms & Children Food Program provides a monthly food box to eligible low-income pregnant women, women 12 months postpartum, breast-feeding mothers and children under 6 years of age.
The Neighborhood Distribution Program distributes food once a month at ten sites throughout the county. Around 90% of the food distributed consists of fresh fruits and vegetables. There are no income or asset restrictions for this program.
This program combines the Food Bank’s food distributions with a recession resource fair that helps families sign up for a range of health and human service programs. Over 30 partner organizations are members of the program and host information tables at Food Bank distributions.
The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program provides chronically hungry elementary school children with a backpack full of child-friendly food every Friday afternoon to prevent them from going hungry over the weekend when free school meals are unavailable.
This program is open to registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations with feeding programs in San Diego County. Eligible organizations can receive food from the San Diego Food Bank to distribute in their local communities. Please see our Becoming A Nonprofit Partner page in our Nonprofit Partners section.
Food Bank staff and volunteers help clients pre-screen for Food Stamps at the Food Bank’s food distributions. If eligible, volunteers help clients fill out the Food Stamp application. The Food Bank’s staff tracks applications that have been submitted to the County Office of Health and Human Services and advocates on behalf of our clients throughout the application process.
GROCERY RESCUE PROGRAM
This program receives food and non-food items from grocery stores and supermarkets that are being discontinued, surplus or close to the expiration date . The products are distributed to San Diego nonprofits through the Food To Nonprofits Program.
The SDFB’s Food Rescue Program “rescues” soon-to-expire fresh and prepared foods from a range of food retailers and delivers the food to local nonprofits who distribute the food immediately to people in need.
Food Bank University is a monthly training program for the Food Bank’s nonprofit partners. Food Bank University features a series of seminars hosted by the Food Bank every month that provide nonprofits with the tools and resources they need to effectively serve the hungry in San Diego County. Half-day seminars focus on the fundamentals of food banking including: fundraising, nutrition, charity finance, nonprofit management, food handling and safety, and the fundamentals of food banking.
