If you are an individual, you can join a fun group project. If you are looking to sign up a large group, we can work with you to get everything set up.

The average volunteer visit is three hours, and in that time you will help hundreds of families in need by processing and packaging food for distribution.

Who can Volunteer?

The Food Bank relies on a diverse range of individuals and volunteer groups.

Our volunteers include individuals, families, senior citizens, corporate groups, religious organizations, school groups, and many others who help us feed the hungry in San Diego County.

The minimum age to volunteer is six years old. Any minor 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. (Please see below: How To Volunteer)

Why the Food Bank Needs Your Help

The San Diego Food Bank feeds over 300,000 people per month, and we rely entirely on our volunteers to inspect, sort, and package tons of food for distribution every day.

Volunteer projects include:

  • Cleaning and packaging fresh produce for immediate distribution.
  • Inspecting, sorting, boxing, and labeling food donations.
  • Assembling food packages for our Senior Food Program, Moms & Children Food Program, Food Assistance Program, and our Food 4 Kids Backpack Program.

How To Volunteer

Volunteering at the Food Bank is easy.

You do not need any special training to volunteer, and there are no constraining time commitments. You may volunteer one time, or on a regular basis.
Each shift lasts about three hours and involves a variety of projects and tasks.

Age Guidelines

Volunteers must be six years or older, and all minors age 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
For groups of children there must be 1 adult present for every 10 children between the ages of 10 and 15, and there must be 1 adult present for every 3 children under the age of 10.

We welcome middle and high school students to complete any school-required service hours, but we would like to remind every volunteer that it is their responsibility to plan and schedule their visit well in advance, since registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Guidelines for Court Mandated Service Hours

The Food Bank accepts court mandated service hours, but ONLY misdemeanor offenses will be considered eligible, and additional documentation must be provided.
