The concept of growing food for personal consumption is not a new one. Gardens have been around for centuries, but they’re making a comeback as a popular way to promote food security and nutrition education. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank has developed partnerships with local garden groups like Victory Gardens San Diego and Olivewood Gardens to provide sustainable food resources to its nonprofit partners. Resources include garden building workshops, community garden tours, nutrition education, and even funding for garden material purchases! At the Food Bank, we realize that hunger is an issue that requires immediate attention. Our food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, low income daycares, and transitional facilities dedicate countless hours of time to addressing the immediacy of food insecurity. We also recognize that the old adage about teaching a man to fish is very applicable to our mission. For this reason, the Food Bank is committed to providing funding to develop these new community gardens in San Diego County. With the strong support of Victory Gardens San Diego and our host sites, there are now active gardens in Serra Mesa, National City, and Linda Vista. It is our dream to see even more garden sites pop up around the county to provide space and resources for San Diegans looking to grow their own food.
