Join iHeart Media and Ralphs – Food 4 Less in supporting the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program!
In 2006, the Food Bank started the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program to provide weekend backpacks full of nutritious, child-friendly food to children in elementary schools throughout San Diego County. These weekend backpacks ensure that they have breakfast and meals they need see them through the weekend until they return to school on Monday morning.
Every Friday afternoon, students on the program are called out of class and are discretely given a bag of food which is tucked into their backpacks.
Currently, the program serves 2,600 students at 51 San Diego County elementary schools in 14 school districts.
Children on the program receive a weekend backpack containing shelf-stable, child-friendly food items such as: peanut butter and jelly packets, beans and franks in pop-top cans, ravioli or stew in pop-top cans, soup in pop-top cans, fruit bars, cereal, tuna fish pouches, corn cups, diced carrots, mixed fruit cups, juice boxes, raisins, granola bars, oatmeal, shelf-stable milk, and macaroni and cheese. And every three weeks, children receive an additional family pack that contains items such as spaghetti sauce, spaghetti, oatmeal, rice, beans and pancake mix.
How much does the program cost?
To provide nutrient-rich food to one child for one school year (that’s 36 weekends), is $200. To keep a student fed over the weekend for one month (4 weekends), is $22 and for just one weekend, is $5.55.
