The Food Bank started our College Hunger-relief Program to help college students who struggle with food insecurity. By helping college students from low-income backgrounds who struggle with hunger, we are helping to ensure that they stay in school, get an education, and ultimately break the cycle of poverty.
MiraCosta College joined the Food Bank’s Food to Nonprofits Program and the college is a member of our Collge Hunger-relief Program. Through our partnership, the Food Bank provides the student-run food pantry with food to distribute to students in need. And we are proud to announce that this month, the food pantry at MiraCosta College was awarded our Nonprofit Partner of the Month award for October from our North County Food Bank chapter! The Service Learning Team at MiraCosta College maintains both a food pantry and a food distribution at their monthly on-campus farmers market. Their onsite food pantry provides emergency food assistance to students in need. Any student who is currently enrolled at MiraCosta qualifies for support. The support consists of a healthy snack, a sack lunch, or a gift card that can be redeemed for food (based on availability). The program provides short-term relief for food-insecure college students and offers referrals for additional community resources for ongoing food assistance programs provided by the Food Bank in the community. The food pantry also hosts monthly mass food distribution sites known as “Farmers Market for You” where fresh produce and other nutritious food items are given to food-insecure students in collaboration with the Food Bank.MiraCosta’s hunger-relief programs are helping more than 1,000 students per month!Keep up the great work!To learn more about the Food Bank’s College Hunger-relief program, CLICK HERE.
