Food Bank Hosts Four Large-scale Emergency 'Drive-Thru' Food Distributions in Response to COVID-19 Crisis

On Saturday, March 28, the Food Bank partnered with the San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council to host a "drive-thru" food distribution for low-income families and seniors affected by the Coronavirus crisis. The Food Bank provided over 12 tons of food to 1,000 vehicles at SDCCU Stadium in central San Diego.On Friday, April 3, the Food Bank partnered with the Del Mar Fairgrounds to host a second mass "drive-thru" food distribution. The Food Bank served another 1,000 vehicles representing 1,000 families in North County.On Friday, April 10, the Food Bank partnered with the City of Chula Vista and Southwestern College to host a mass "drive-thru" food distribution for 1,000 families living in the South Bay. And on Friday, April 17, the Food Bank partnered with the City of La Mesa and Grossmont Centere to host a mass "drive-thru" food distribution for 1,000 families living in East County.All four mass food distributions were "contactless" to ensure the safety of the volunteers and clients at both locations. Attendees remained in their cars, and volunteers placed groceries in vehicle trunks.Special thanks to the volunteers who supported all four mass food distributions. Volunteers, including the Labor Council and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), did an amazing job helping ensure that the distributions ran smoothly. Each family that attended the three mass food distributions received approximately 30 pounds of food and products including toilet paper, paper towels and baby wipes.In addition to these mass food distributions, the Food Bank provides food for approximately 100 scheduled food distributions every week.
